How do I create a screensaver from a Java applet or class file?

Creating a screen saver from a Java applet is easier than you might think.  Active Screen Saver Personal/DevKit displays any Java applet just like your web browser.

If you are using Active Screen Saver DevKit, you will need to distribute any .class, .cab, or .zip files required by you Java applet with your screen saver.

More Information:

For more information on this applet search for "Lake Class Java Applet" in your favorite search engine.

A lot of screen savers feature Java applets, and if you've been searching the Internet, you may have found an applet you'd like to add to your own screen saver. This guide will help you to do just that, and will point out some common problems and tips to simplify the task.
  1. First, select the Java Applet you would like to add to your screen saver. Download each of the necessary .class files along with the appropriate supporting files, if applicable.

  2. Next, make a note of the HTML source, (most applet developers will provide sample HTML on their web site), and copy the syntax into your HTML document.

  3. Move the .class or .jar file(s) into the appropriate directory (the path indicated in the CODEBASE= portion of the <APPLET> tag, or the directory of your HTML document if no CODEBASE= is specified).

  4. If the Applet requires image and/or sound files (generally .gif, .jpg, and .au files), place them in the appropriate directories as indicated on the applet page.

  5. You are now ready to test the Applet by displaying the HTML page using your browser.

  6. If everything is working properly, you are ready to begin using the applet
as your screen saver, or to redistribute it using Active Screen Saver DevKit.
Troubleshooting

If you see "Applet can't start: class ______ not found" in your browser's status line, it can mean one of two things:

  1. The .class file(s) are not named correctly. Java is case-sensitive, so be sure to follow precise capitalization.
  2. The .class file(s) are not in the correct directory. They should be located in the path indicated in the CODEBASE= portion of the <APPLET> tag, or the directory of your HTML document if no CODEBASE= is specified.
To further enable you to locate the problem, you may start the Java console (under Internet Explorer).  See your Internet Explorer Help for more information on enabling this property.. The Java Console will give you more details than the status bar, and may help you find out why the applet will not run. Often, it will show you that the applet depends on more than one class file, and you'll need to upload that class file as well.

The applet may be written for a newer JDK than you have on your system.
